Sermon Notes: Dig Until God Does

Here are my sermon notes from Elevation Church preached on June 4, 2023.

As always, please remember that these are just my notes.

Even though I made extra effort to capture as many pertinent points as possible, it is best for you to watch the full message.

Note that this is not a transcription of the sermon. Therefore, Pastor Steven’s stories and jokes were not captured.

So again, you will miss the full gamut of what is a wonderful, anointed message if you do not watch or listen to the sermon.

Why Sermon Notes?

I enjoy capturing these notes for a few reasons.

Firstly, it allows me to engage with the sermon more. My wandering, undisciplined mind is focused and I get to really capture what is being taught.

The next practical reason is this provides an albeit small opportunity to be of service to anyone who wants a quick overview of the message.

Specifically, sermon notes are helpful to those who join Elevation e-groups.

The hope is that my notes will become handy for those who need a quick recap for the sermon discussion portion of their meetings.

Now on to the notes you came here for…

Key Passage:

2 Kings 3:13-20

Pastor Steven pointed out that his main point last week was “You will know when you need to

His second point is the focus of this sermon:

Point 2 – It will flow when it’s supposed to

  • Most of the sudden recognitions flow from gradual buildups.
  • The scripture shows us that subtle habits that build up gradually can lead to sudden situations.
  • Success isn’t sudden. It is a step-by-step process that strengthens you.
  • If you steady yourself under the mighty hand of God and understand the nature of struggle, you can achieve success.
  • A steady hand brings a sudden blessing

The Nature of a Struggle

You have to understand the nature of struggle, just as you have to understand the nature of success.

  • When it starts slow and hits suddenly, it will mean more and last longer.
  • Do it in the secret place – What is secret, God can make sudden. See Matthew 6:6-8. Everything we realize suddenly, started secretly. What was done secretly will also be the treasure of the process.
  • Sometimes you go through desert seasons on your way to fight battles – 2 Kings 3:16.
  • Do not focus on what you see, but focus on what God says. Note how “Thus says the Lord” was said twice in the passage. (Verses 16-17)

This Will Help You In Your Daily Life

  • Move from “This is” to “Thus says…”. See the situation but focus on what God says. This is how you move from being a victim to being a victor.
  • Declare “Thus says the Lord”…”The Lord is my Shepherd”.Isn’t it amazing how God can bring blessings from a dry place? That was the same desert that they marched through for 7 days, yet water is going to flow from it.

What Did You Have To Dig?

  • He told them to dig ditches in this dry place – 2 Kings 3:16. Note that God did not say how or when it will happen, but they dug anyway. This is water they were lacking… essential water.
  • The issue isn’t “will God?“; it’s “when God?”. It flows when it’s supposed to.
  • When it flows, will you be where you are supposed to be? Everything people have reaped in their lives came from something God blessed them with while they were digging. The enemy will try to get you so weary and discouraged that you stop digging. Adopt the attitude that this is why I am digging-because I am dry.

Decide: Digging or Drought?

  • Dig through the issue rather than dance around it. Scream “I dug it…God did it!”
  • God will fill it when I dig….When I dig it even though I don’t feel it.
  • Remember those men who dug in 2 Kings 3:16 were more than dry…they were dehydrated. God didn’t make it come instantly because the sun wasn’t up yet. They would have felt defeated but they dug anyway. Look at verse 17 – You will not see wind, you will not see rain…”

How to Navigate a No

  • In verse 17, these men would have been navigating a ‘no’. – “What will you do until God does”?
  • It flows when it is supposed to. Don’t let “No” be your emotional home.
  • Make a Confession of Faith – “I’ll be digging until God does” because He knows. See Jeremiah 29:11.
  • Note verse 20 – It begins with “Now”. This is just “No” with something after it.

Pastor Steven’s Tip

  • Start your budget when you are broke. Learn to steward in the dry place.

Why Did God Wait?

  • The suddenly in verse 20 would look sudden if you were watching it unfold but it would be steady if you were out there digging it.
  • Pastor Steven pointed out that ‘Edom’ means ‘red’. The water appeared red to the enemy because when the sun rose, it kissed the water in the perfect timing to throw them off.
  • Verse 23 – God is so intentional! It will flow when it’s supposed to!

I hope these Sermon Notes: Dig Until God Does blessed you.
