Here are my sermon notes on this installment: Cuffed to Cake (Sunday, June 5, 2022)
As per usual, let me remind you that these are just my notes.
Even though I made extra effort to capture as many pertinent points as possible, you really ought to watch the full sermon to get the fullness of this powerful message.
I really believe that this whole series has been powerful.
Still, this particular one is a must see. It ought to be convicting for every single one of us.
May it bless you as much as it has blessed me.
Pre-Sermon Encouragement
The truth, even when spoken in love, when you don’t wanna hear it,can be offensive.
The truth must always be spoken in love.
Ask God to help you participate in His principles.
Don’t be mad at God if you do not do what is prescribed.
Cuffed To Cake Sermon Notes
Cuffed to Cake is the sermon title but the subtitle is Satan’s Favorite Sin – Gluttony.
Gluttony is rarely preached about in churches. Many have never heard a full message on it.
The truth is some of you are more loyal to your stomach than your Savior.
The bite over is Gluttony
- If you have ever taken 1 bite over what is necessary, it is a sin
- The Bible says gluttony is the same as adultery, lying, murder
- Eating is not a hobby – We black people need to stop making eating a hobby
- We have bowed to a culture of buffet
- We have been influenced to satisfy emotional needs through our mouth
- Gluttony is usually us
- Proverbs 23:21
- What I eat, can deplete.
- Food is neutral(the same way money is)
- What is your motive to get food?
Gluttony is a limitless appetite (it kills callings) for food and drink and overindulgence to the point where one is no longer eating just to live but is living to eat.
- A lot of us base our friendships more on food than fellowship
- Disclaimer – Jesus made food a corner stone of his gatherings
- But are you cuffed to it?
- Be careful of free – Free costs and the food that is free may be costing you your spiritual freedom
The sin of gluttony is idolatry. It is a choice of comfort and control through food.
The Purpose of Food
- Food is fuel for me
- The primary purpose of food should be fuel.
- Gluttony is an indication of a lack of self-control.
- Don’t be cuffed to the comfort of food
- If you are cuffed to the cookie (food), then the cookie has control, and if the cookie with oreo has control, the cookie from your friend that you think is attractive will have control too. Read between the lines.
24 There is nothing better for a person than that he should eat and drink and find enjoyment in his toil. This also, I saw, is from the hand of God,
Ecclesiastes 2:24
- Enjoying food and drink and work are connected.
- Enjoy pleasure in moderation
- Don’t eat unless you work
Food is good, it just can’t be God
22 And he said to his disciples, “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat, nor about your body, what you will put on. 23 For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing.
Luke 12:22-23
- Your Spirit is
- most valuable part of you
- eternal
- Your Soul (mind, will and emotions)
- most vulnerable
- educated
- Your Body
- man’s vehicle
- expires
- It can expire before God’s due date. We take years off our life when we are cuffed to comfort, convenience and cake
- Gluttony is a spirit
- Take care of your vehicle
- What fuel are you putting in your vehicle
- Take care of your vehicle
- Self-control is a fruit of the Spirit
Gluttony is all about of the Heart
7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”
1 Samuel 16:7
Gluttony isn’t a weight issue, its a worship issue
31 So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
1 Corinthians 10:31
- Start eating for the glory of God. It is biblical
- If it is uncomfortable, it is a stronghold
- It is an addiction. (If it causes you to have a withdrawal, it’s demonic)
Gluttony is Satan’s favorite sin, because it’s subtle.
- He had 2 chances to take out humanity.
- tempting (and succeeding) Eve
- tempting Jesus
- we can run the risk of thinking our life is run better controlled by food than controlled by God
- Are you running to food to fill an emotional hole that only God can heal?
- Our food addictions can take years off our purpose
- Sometimes God wont use us at another level because we are still cuffed to the cake
Today, on Pentecost Sunday, God’s grace will help us overcome gluttony.
19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20
- You are the AirBnB/temple/home for the Holy Spirit
- Holy Spirit would rather a sacrifice with your body than with your pockets
- Remember progression over perfection
4 Positive Things About Your Body

How To Beat Gluttony
- You need accountability
- Be a disciple – Be disciplined not just in prayers but also in portions
- Disconnect from convenience and comfort
- Say Yes, No, Go

- Remember it’s when you fast, not if you fast

- Flee from sin – all it takes is one taste
- Go workout
- Go see a professional
- If you don’t go do something, you are disobedient

13 for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.
Philippians 2:13
