Pursuing Meekness in A Fast-Paced World

Meekness is intriguing and quite uncelebrated in these times we live in today.

By its very nature though, meekness would avoid celebration.

It is not a quality that propels people into the spotlight.

Very rarely do we even hear the word.

But What Exactly Is Meekness?

The Oxford dictionary defines meek as being quiet, gentle, and easily imposed on.

It goes on to attribute the word to being submissive. With this meaning, it shouldn’t be hard for us to grasp why meekness is associated with weakness, thus making it generally undesirable.

From a biblical standpoint though, the dictionary’s take fails to capture what it means to be meek by God’s standards.

Meekness is a heart posture of setting aside one’s own agenda and submitting in totality to the desire of another; most importantly God.

The Word tells us that those who possess this virtue are called blessed.

So, even though it is counter-culture, it is evidently a very valued virtue in the Bible – one every devout believer should seek.

Here are 25 instances we’ve found that speaks about this admirable quality.

Note that most of these are from the ESV translation while a few are from the standard KJV bible.

Song Choice

Today we leave you this beautiful song by Graham Kendrick called Meekness & Majesty.

Look at the lyrics:

Meekness and majesty,
Manhood and Deity, In perfect harmony,
The Man who is God. Lord of eternity
Dwells in humanity, Kneels in humility
And washes our feet.

O what a mystery,
Meekness and majesty.
Bow down and worship
For this is your God,
This is your God.

So what do you think about Meekness?

Is meekness a quality you would like to cultivate?

If you like so many of us used to consider meekness to be weakness, rest now in the knowledge there was none more meek than our Lord Jesus Christ.

Indeed, our Savior subjected Himself to coming to earth as a vulnerable newborn and grew up amongst people who constantly erred.

He put aside His majesty to sacrifice for broken people and in the very end, requested forgiveness on our behalf.

He is indeed the gentle, meek, lamb that was slain.

Hallelujah to our King!
